Waitlist Opens Early 2027 — The Schober Academy

The Schober Academy

An apprenticeship-style program in founding and superintelligence — with a room of your own, in Saint Paul

The Academy

The Schober Academy is an apprenticeship-style program in Saint Paul for college students attending school in Saint Paul and Minneapolis. You rent a private room in our Highland Park duplex, and about ten hours a week go to the principles of founding and of superintelligence. It is supplemental to your degree, not a replacement for it — your coursework stays where it is, and this runs alongside it.

Four rooms, one cohort. The first group stays the full school year, roughly nine months. Mentorship and teaching are individualized around your class and work schedule rather than run off a fixed timetable, so what the ten hours look like depends on what you are building and when you are free.

The waitlist opens in early 2027. Join the interest list below and we will write to you the day it does.

Where You Live

What You Learn

About ten hours a week, split across two subjects and shaped around your own schedule.

Founding

The principles behind starting something: finding a problem somebody will pay to have solved, talking to customers before you build, pricing, keeping a simple set of books, and the unglamorous work of selling.

Superintelligence

What today’s frontier AI models can and cannot do, and how to tell the difference. Writing context that holds up, building with agents and tools, checking output you cannot verify by eye, and thinking honestly about where these systems are going.

Individual Mentorship

No fixed lecture night. Teaching and mentorship are built around your class and work schedule, so the ten hours fit the term you are actually having rather than the one a syllabus assumed.

Your Private Room

Four private rooms to start, two on each side of the duplex. One flat rate, averaging about $1,800 a month with every utility included. Your room is yours; each side has its own kitchen and its own bathroom.

A Room of Your Own

A private furnished bedroom — the part of the house that belongs to you alone. Four rooms in the first cohort, and the rooms differ in size, so which one you take matters.

One Flat Rate

One flat monthly payment, averaging about $1,800 and set by the size of your room. All utilities are included — no separate bills for electricity, water, trash, or the 1 Gbps internet — and the ten hours a week of teaching cost nothing extra.

A Full School Year

The first cohort runs the length of the school year — roughly nine months — so the people around you are the same people from the first week to the last.

Our first cohort will have a stay that lasts the entire school year — approximately nine months. Move-in is set around the start of that year; the waitlist opens in early 2027.

All utilities are included in your cost. What makes this stay unique is the educational component you receive while staying with us — approximately ten hours each week, dedicated to the principles of both founding and superintelligence. It is supplemental to your studies at the nearby schools.

About ten hours a week. Mentorship and teaching are individualized based on your school and work schedule, so there is no fixed lecture night to work around — we build the time around the term you are actually having.

Your room is private; the kitchen is shared. The house is a duplex, and the starting cohort of four is split two and two across the two sides — each side has its own kitchen and its own bathroom, shared only with the one other resident on that side.

Quiet hours are 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM each day. No smoking or vaping inside the building. The lease also rules out pets and subletting. The rest is in the resident handbook.

This varies depending on the college you are going to, but there are many, many transportation options in this part of town — Metro Transit routes along Ford Parkway, Cleveland Avenue, and Snelling Avenue, the A Line running north, free street parking, and an easy bike season. One winter note: Saint Paul declares snow emergencies after heavy snowfall and the whole street has to be cleared on the posted schedule. Details at stpaul.gov/snow.

Our waitlist will be opening in early 2027 — please check back here. If you would rather not keep checking, join the interest list and we will write to you the day it opens.

Where We Start

The Academy is not a reading list, but these are the free resources we point residents at first.

Startup School

Y Combinator’s free course on starting a company — the clearest short introduction to customers, products, and fundraising we know of. startupschool.org

MIT OpenCourseWare

Full university courses, free, including the machine learning and entrepreneurship material we lean on when a resident wants to go deeper than a workshop can. ocw.mit.edu

Saint Paul Public Library

A library card is free with a Saint Paul address, and the Highland Park branch is a short walk from the house — books, databases, study rooms, and meeting space. sppl.org

Why We Built This

The Schober family has been in Minnesota for nearly a century — Matt’s great-grandfather Gus helped build Robbinsdale, the first suburb of Minneapolis. Four generations later the trade is the same one it always was: buy something, fix it, put it to work, and let the next person stand on it. The Academy exists because the two skills that compound fastest right now — founding something, and working with machines that keep getting smarter — are not reliably taught anywhere a student can also afford to sleep. Founding is learned by selling something, not by reading about selling. Working with intelligent machines is learned by building with them while they are still changing underneath you. So we did the simple thing: a house near the schools, a private room a student can actually rent, and ten hours a week with someone who has done it before.
