Resident Handbook

How the house and the program run

Welcome

Welcome to The Schober Academy. You are renting a private room in a shared house, which means two things at once: the room is yours, and the kitchen you share with one other person only works if you both treat it that way. This handbook covers how the house runs day to day. Anything it does not answer, call Matt at 651-797-6900.

Your Room

  • Your bedroom is yours — nobody else uses it
  • Furnished with a bed, a desk, and closet space
  • Linens and towels are provided; bring your own computer
  • Hang what you like, but ask before you put holes in plaster
  • Tell Matt about a repair early rather than late

Shared Space

  • The building is a duplex; two residents live on each side
  • Each side has its own kitchen and its own bathroom — shared with one housemate, not three
  • Wash your own dishes the day you use them
  • Label your food if you care about it
  • Leave the kitchen the way you would want to find it at 1 a.m. before an exam

Study & Quiet Hours

  • Quiet hours: 9:00 PM – 7:00 AM, every day
  • Quiet hours are study hours — headphones in common areas after 9
  • Take calls and meetings in your own room
  • During finals week, assume everyone else is also in finals week

The Program

  • About ten hours a week on the principles of founding and of superintelligence
  • Scheduled individually around your class and work hours — no fixed lecture night
  • Supplemental to your studies; your own coursework comes first
  • Tell us your schedule at the start of each term, and tell us when it changes
  • Unfinished work is welcome. Not showing up is what costs you

House Rules

  • Quiet hours 9:00 PM – 7:00 AM, every day
  • No smoking or vaping inside the building
  • No pets, per the lease
  • No subletting and no handing your room to someone else, per the lease
  • Occasional overnight guests are fine with a heads-up to your housemate; standing arrangements are not
  • Respect the neighbors — this is a residential block, not a campus

WiFi & Workstations

  • 1 Gbps fiber internet, included in your rate
  • Network name and password provided at move-in
  • Smart TV with streaming apps in the common area
  • Do not run anything on the house network you would not explain to the house

Kitchen

  • Fully equipped — cookware, dishes, coffee maker, toaster
  • Groceries, toilet paper, and paper towels are each resident’s own
  • Run the dishwasher when it is full, not when it is overflowing
  • Garbage goes in the black bins beside the house; recycling in the blue bins
  • Recycling cannot be in bags

Laundry

  • Combo washer/dryer unit, included in your flat rate
  • Detergent provided
  • Clean the lint trap after each dryer use
  • Take your load out when it is done — one machine, four people

Heating & Cooling

  • Central heating and air conditioning
  • Thermostat is in the hallway and is set for your whole side
  • Keep it between 65 and 75 degrees — and in January, do not open windows to cool a room

Parking & Snow

  • Free street parking in front of the house; no permit needed
  • Watch for posted restrictions on the block
  • Saint Paul declares snow emergencies after heavy snowfall — the whole street must be cleared on the posted schedule
  • Sign up for city alerts and move your car; the alternative is a tow
  • Details: stpaul.gov/snow

Emergency Contacts

  • Emergency services: 911
  • Matt Schober (landlord): 651-797-6900
  • Nearest clinic: M Health Fairview — Highland Park (0.4 miles)
  • Nearest hospital: United Hospital (about 4.5 miles)
  • Tell your school where you live and who to call — most have a 24-hour line of their own

When You Move Out

  • Strip the bed and leave the linens in a pile
  • Empty your room, including the closet and under the bed
  • Clear your food out of the kitchen and the fridge on your side
  • Take the trash to the bins outside
  • Return your key and leave a forwarding address so the deposit can be returned
  • The cohort moves out together at the end of the school year
